Sony Pictures Television fired the longtime announcer after investigating a May airline incident. Season 44 still premieres September 14 — without his voice.

If you tune in when Wheel of Fortune returns on Monday, September 14, you will still hear the familiar wheel, the puzzle reveals, and Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White. You will not hear Jim Thornton.

Sony Pictures Television, which produces the syndicated series, terminated Thornton on September 4, 2026, three days after suspending him. An interim announcer has already re-recorded his lines on episodes that were taped before the news broke. No permanent replacement has been named.

Who Jim Thornton was on the show

Thornton, 61, became the show’s announcer in 2011 after the death of Charlie O’Donnell, who had been the voice of Wheel for decades. Thornton also announced Celebrity Wheel of Fortune after it launched in 2021 and previously filled in on The Price Is Right. Before national television, he spent years as a Los Angeles radio and traffic reporter, including work at KNX.

Announcers are not the faces of the franchise, but they are part of the ritual: “From the Sony Pictures Studios…” and the prize reads that millions of viewers hear five nights a week. Removing that voice from a season that was already in the can is unusual — and expensive. Page Six reported that the first month of Season 44 had already been taped, and that re-editing those shows was described internally as a “major undertaking.”

Deadline later reported that Thornton will also be absent from Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, which is scheduled to return to ABC on October 2.

The timeline, in brief

May 14, 2026: American Airlines Flight 1276 flies from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Los Angeles. A passenger reports a concern to the crew. The airline later confirmed that law enforcement met the aircraft at LAX.
Same day: Thornton is questioned and released. His attorney says he was not arrested and was not charged.
September 1: Sony announces it has “recently been made aware of allegations,” suspends Thornton, and begins recasting while it investigates.
September 3: TMZ publishes passenger photographs of Thornton on the flight with a laptop open to a website called lifeline.chat, described in coverage as a forum for people with pedophilic attractions. Other outlets pick up the photos and the attorney’s written explanation.

September 14: Season 44 premieres with an interim announcer already in the mix.

What the photographs are said to show

According to TMZ, Page Six, the Los Angeles Times, Variety, and other outlets that reviewed or described the images, a neighboring passenger photographed Thornton’s laptop during the flight. The screen showed the site lifeline.chat — not the official 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — and a live chat with messages that sexualized children and referenced child sexual abuse material by initials. Reporting also associated outgoing messages in the chat bar with the username NicholasB77. Timestamps visible in the photos have been described as spanning roughly an hour.

The passenger notified a flight attendant. The captain alerted authorities. American Airlines’ public statement was limited: Flight 1276 “was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard.”

What Thornton’s attorney says happened

Allison Hart, identifying herself as Thornton’s lawyer, told TMZ and Page Six that he did nothing illegal. Her account, in summary:

After losing a close family member to suicide about two years earlier, Thornton became active in suicide-prevention advocacy and used 988lifeline.org and its chat forum.
An acquaintance in that space sent him a similar-looking URL, lifeline.chat, which he believed was another suicide-support forum.
He says he did not initially know the site described itself as support for people with pedophilic thoughts, left once he understood, and has not returned.
Hart said the site itself is not unlawful, that it contained no illegal child sexual abuse material, and that Thornton has never viewed, downloaded, or consumed such material — on that flight or otherwise.
She said officers spoke with him briefly at LAX, concluded no crime had occurred, and told him he was free to go.

That is the defense on the record. It has not been tested in court, because there has been no public criminal case. The FBI, asked for comment, gave its standard line: it neither confirms nor denies the existence of investigations.

Coverage of the photos has focused on the tension between “I left as soon as I realized” and timestamps suggesting the page stayed open for close to an hour, plus messages that, if they came from the person at that keyboard, do not read like a brief accidental click. Those are allegations and inferences from photographs. They are not a verdict.

Why the show still dropped him

A television producer does not need a conviction to end a contract. Sony’s first statement was careful and thin on facts. Its second statement was shorter and final. The company never published a narrative of the flight. It investigated, then cut ties.

From a network-and-syndication standpoint, the calculation is straightforward:

Wheel of Fortune is a family-hour franchise built on prizes, puns, and a decades-long brand of harmlessness.
The passenger photos, once public, made the allegations impossible to treat as an internal rumor.
Episodes were already in the pipeline for a September 14 launch. Leaving the original tracks in place would have put the disputed voice on millions of televisions the same week the photos circulated.
Re-voicing is disruptive, but it is cheaper than a season-long advertiser and affiliate problem.

Employment law and criminal law answer different questions. “No arrest” is not the same as “the studio kept him.” Sony answered the studio question.

What you will hear instead

Variety reported that an interim announcer has already revoiced Thornton’s parts for the new season. As of September 5, Sony has not announced a permanent successor. Historically the chair has been held by a small number of voices: Charlie O’Donnell (the defining modern tenure), Jack Clark, M.G. Kelly, and then Thornton from 2011 to 2026.

Viewers who stream older seasons on Hulu or Peacock will still hear Thornton on those episodes. The change is prospective: new Season 44 shows, and the celebrity edition returning in October, are being built without him.

What remains unresolved

Several facts are solid: the flight number and date, the airline’s confirmation that police met the plane, Sony’s suspension and firing language, the existence of passenger photographs described by multiple newsrooms, and the absence of public charges.

Several facts are not: whether prosecutors opened a longer investigation, whether the username in the chat has been forensically tied to Thornton in a court filing, whether the “wrong URL” story will be expanded with more documentation, and who becomes the permanent voice of the wheel.

Until a charging document or a detailed studio report appears, the responsible version of this story is the one above — not a courtroom conclusion dressed up as television gossip.
