Western Oklahoma and portions of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles are facing a dangerous combination of heat, strong winds, very dry fuels and the possibility of thunderstorms capable of producing lightning with limited rainfall.

The concern is not simply that a fire could start. Under these conditions, a fire that does start can spread extremely quickly, while thunderstorm outflow winds can cause fire behavior to become erratic with very little warning.

Thursday, August 13, is shaping up to be a particularly concerning fire-weather day across portions of the Southern Plains.

The National Weather Service is already highlighting fire-weather concerns across western Oklahoma, while NWS Amarillo is warning of a renewed dry-thunderstorm threat across parts of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles.

That combination deserves attention because thunderstorms do not necessarily mean that wildfire danger is reduced. In a dry-thunderstorm environment, storms can produce lightning, strong downdraft winds and outflow boundaries while delivering little meaningful rain to the ground.

The northeastern combined Panhandles also have a low-end severe-thunderstorm threat Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening, with damaging straight-line winds potentially reaching 70 mph.
