J.R. "Bob" Dobbs: The Pipe-Smoking Prophet of Slack
By [Your Name] • [Date]
Who is "Bob"?
J.R. "Bob" Dobbs is the grinning, pipe-smoking figurehead of the Church of the SubGenius, one of the most gloriously absurd parody religions ever created. Born from 1970s Texas weirdness, "Bob" (always with quotation marks) is depicted as a 1950s-style salesman who achieved ultimate "Slack" — that elusive state of effortless cool, financial independence, and cosmic luck.
According to SubGenius lore, in 1953 "Bob" saw a vision of the alien space god JHVH-1 on a TV set he built himself. This revelation led him to found the Church and promise followers eternal salvation (or triple their money back) before the world ends on X-Day (originally July 5, 1998 — now perpetually rescheduled).
The Church of the SubGenius
- Founded in the late 1970s by Rev. Ivan Stang and Dr. Philo Drummond in Dallas/Fort Worth.
- A satirical mix of conspiracy theories, sci-fi, pulp fiction, televangelism, and Discordian absurdity.
- Core promise: "Bob" will save the SubGenii (creative misfits) from the "Pinks" (conformist normals) and the Conspiracy.
- Famous for rants, collages, and the pursuit of Slack — doing exactly what you want with minimal effort.
"Pull the wool over your own eyes!"
— J.R. "Bob" Dobbs
"Bob"'s iconic image comes from 1940s–1950s clip art (originally a Bell Telephone ad). He has been "assassinated" multiple times but always returns — because "Bob" is too lucky to stay dead.
Connections to Robert Anton Wilson & Discordianism
The Church overlaps heavily with RAW’s ideas, the 23 Enigma, and Discordianism. It’s all about questioning authority, embracing absurdity, and hacking reality through humor and creative chaos.
