Paranoid Ponderings: The NSW Fires, Smart Cities & That 1% That Keeps Me Awake

Published: December 10, 2025

Look, I’m not saying the NSW fires were started by a space laser operated by a cabal of renewable-energy billionaires who want to turn Koolewong into a 15-minute smart-city testbed powered by koala-shaped micro-reactors.

I’m also not saying none of it is possible.

I’m just a guy who’s watched too many of these “coincidences” stack up over the years and is now staring at the latest batch of drone footage (perfect rows of incinerated houses, trees still leafy and smug) thinking… huh. Again?

1. The Pattern Is Getting Hard to Ignore

  • Maui → “build back green” announcements within weeks
  • Paradise, California → high-speed rail corridor quietly expanded through the burn scar
  • Chile, Greece, Canada → same weird house-to-house burn, same post-fire land-value feeding frenzy
  • Now the Central Coast NSW… literally inside the planned Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone transmission corridor

Every. Single. Time.

2. The Timing Is Always Impeccable

Dry lightning on the exact weekend the mercury hits 42 °C and the wind decides to do its best hurricane impression? Sure, nature’s a jerk.
But nature also has a habit of being extremely convenient for certain five-year plans.

3. The Rebuild Script Is Already Written

You watch. Within 6–12 months we’ll start hearing:

“These homes were built to outdated standards”
“We can’t rebuild the old way; climate resilience demands density and embedded micro-grids”
“Good news, residents! Your block is now part of a new community battery and EV-charging hub”

I’ve seen the PowerPoint. It’s the same deck they used in Lahaina, just with eucalypts instead of palms.

4. The Money Always Knows Before the Fire Trucks Arrive

Check the options trades, the land-title transfers, the quiet little SPVs that bought the adjoining vacant blocks six months ago.
I’m not saying do it… I’m saying someone already did, and they’re sipping something expensive right now.

5. And Yet…

I also know the simplest explanation is usually the right one: Australia is a giant tinderbox, we keep building flammable houses next to it, and climate change is turning the dial to “extra crispy.”
Occam’s razor says incompetence and bad planning is doing 99 % of the work.

But that 1 %?
That 1 % keeps me awake.

So yeah, maybe I’ll delete this post tomorrow when the hangover of rationality kicks in.
Or maybe in ten years I’ll point at the gleaming new “Koolewong Smart Resilience Precinct” (complete with embedded 5G small cells, facial-recognition streetlights, and a mandatory resident app) and whisper… told you so.

Either way, stay paranoid, stay kind, and maybe keep a paper map in the glovebox.
Just in case the cell towers go down right when the next “once-in-a-century” fire rolls through.

Yours in mild existential dread,
DFWSAS
