Texans Fighting For Continued Legal Access To THC
Protecting Legal Hemp in Texas: Benefits and Advocacy Against SB 5
Published: July 25, 2025 | Author: Shane Shipman
Why Hemp Matters in Texas
Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived products—legally defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC—have transformed lives in Texas. As highlighted in a recent X post by Shane Shipman (https://t.co/5KTUFYWx1k), these products offer legal access to cannabinoids that relieve pain, inflammation, anxiety, and nausea. Studies (e.g., 2025 Journal of Cannabis Research) confirm minimal harm, with less than 1% serious adverse events, making hemp a safe alternative to pharmaceuticals.
Yet, this access is under threat. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick pushes for a total ban, while Gov. Greg Abbott seeks to stop intoxicating THC sales. Senate Bill 5 (SB 5), introduced on July 21, 2025, could restrict or criminalize these products, risking an underground market.
The Benefits Backed by Evidence
- Pain Relief: CBD and THCA reduce chronic pain without opioid risks.
- Inflammation: CBG and CBC show anti-inflammatory properties in early studies.
- Anxiety: CBD modulates the endocannabinoid system, easing stress safely.
- Nausea: CBDA, found in raw hemp, outperforms some anti-nausea drugs (2017 study).
With 60% of Texans supporting cannabis reform (2025 UT/Texas Tribune Poll), the demand is clear—yet legislation lags behind science.
The Threat of SB 5 and Legislative Push
SB 5, currently in a special session, proposes regulations with potential bans on consumable hemp products. Patrick’s SB 3 on June 22, 2025, was overturned, and Abbott’s stance signals a crackdown. If passed (SB 5), this could drive users to unsafe, unregulated sources, undoing the $8 billion hemp industry and 50,000 jobs (FOX 7 Austin, 2025).
We must act to ensure safe, legal access persists.
